I always say (and genuinely believe) that when you’re hypervisible online (not famous or wealthy, just visible), people project an image of who they believe you to be on you. And when you don’t live up to that image—or disappoint them in some way—you become a villain to them.
That is a double-edged sword. Most of us, myself included, are sharing less than 20 percent of ourselves and our lives online. People are gaining access to your avatar, not your full self, so how can you disappoint people who don’t actually know you?
It’s also interesting being hypervisible and perceived as a gatekeeper in an industry like media. That comes with another set of expectations—again from people who don’t know you. It is all so odd and so strange.
I constantly have to remind myself: Only the people I allow in actually know me. I know who my people are. To many others, I’m just a gateway to an opportunity, and that’s okay. I just can’t ever get that confused.
