"How hard could this be," they asked. "Just use Google Sheets," they said.

Hi. Yes. Maybe all the people with the hot takes about how this is all the app developer's fault because it was so super easy could explain why it's taken multiple days to collect the data? Remember, it's just putting up a Google sheet, right? Thanks in advance.

Title's a little clickbait-y (but "An Organizational Alignment Analysis of Possible Factors Leading to the Iowa Caucus Outage" didn't have the same ring), but there are a lot of takes that a bad outcome must imply incompetence on the part of the developers and that ain't true.

The latest episode interleaving Britain leaving the EU, the U.S. Senate voting down witnesses, and the Wuhan quarantine is fishy. In this tweetstorm, I'll demonstrate that this is clearly storytelling in a non-linear timeline...1/83

Cats and Rise of Skywalker are the same movie. Change my mind. 1) Focus on the importance of names 2) Exploration of CG as transgression against laws of nature 3) Plotline where one lucky person gets a title that's really just being offed from the horrible world that they're in

So they're pricing to encourage that kind of workload with the hopes they'll be able to make it back with higher efficiency, without end users having to make the traditional tradeoffs of preemptible workloads.

Given the blog post and the limited instance size, it seems like with E2, Google is trying to leverage their better instance isolation technology to build up a base of predictable, small workloads that they can co-schedule with shared-core or preemptible workloads.

The memory discounts are similar. And notably, while committed-use discounts are flexible compared to legacy EC2 reserved instances, they don't span n1 vs. e2.

The place where E2 *is* cheaper is in a committed use situation. Whereas N1 1 year committed CPU is 10% cheaper ($14.53 vs. $16.15) than on-demand for the whole month, E2 committed CPU is 37% cheaper ($10.03 vs. $15.92).

If you're not running instances for long enough to get sustained use, E2 will be relatively cheaper. Although remember that sustained use is a discount that applies to the histogram of your instance usage rather than any particular instance.

This means that for instances running for the whole month N1 vs. E2 is roughly a wash: $16.15 vs $15.92 /vCPU and $2.16 vs. $2.13 /GB of memory. And since predefined E2 instances have slightly more memory-per-core, they're actually slightly more expensive on-demand.

But the pricing info is up. The first non-obvious thing: there's no sustained use discount for E2.

First off, the blog post says the instance type is coming this week to us-central1, including -b, but it doesn't show up for us-central1-b in gcloud beta compute machine-types list for me yet, so I don't have performance numbers for the type yet.

Just did a little research on the new E2 instance type in GCP: - results threaded below. I'm entirely focused on us-central1 since that's where our footprint is, so check your region if appropriate.

Hey friends, if you get a recruiter emailing you about a startup called Hawkfish, the part where they say they're the primary platform for the DNC appears to be complete BS.

I have been informed that teaching the dog to rise up against her oppressor when crated is not "good praxis" but rather "annoying". Onward, comrades!
