Some communication tips I’ve learned so far — a thread

(So so many smart Americans have this verbal tic it makes me wonder if you get taught it in university or something)

Be totally present in every conversation. Multi-tasking is fake and hugely disrespectful. Humans cannot do it. Your focus is binary - either you are listening and engaged or not. If you are in a conversation that isn’t worth your time then that’s a bigger problem.

Related to multi-tasking, don’t stare at yourself in video chats. We’re naturally vain, and so many of us do this and it’s really obvious. Only thing I’ve found that works is remove my preview from all video chats (most apps have a way to do this).

If you’re in a position of leadership never ever respond to any comment or question, no matter how inane, with hostility. This shuts down the flow of ideas and is so hard to reverse. And your hostility can be very subtle. Face, body language, tone, everything is communication.

I learned this lesson the hardest way last year, and as I’ve been very intentional to change it (slowly but surely) its remarkable to see the level to which it has changed the dynamic of the entire team.

Learn the Pyramid Principle, and apply a simple version of it to your communication. Always start at the highest level and let the discussion bring you down into the details. Poor communicators start in the details without framing and giving good context. Thing I coach the most

e.g.: - ‘question’ -> “yes” - “why?” -> ‘these three reasons’ - “pls expand on reason 3” -> ‘details on reason 3’ Most people answer the original question with the details answer.

Be authentically you when you communicate. If you have a broad vocabulary, use it. I despise this trend of speaking in international business English. It’s not better - it’s contributing to the dumbing down of our species. Complex obscure words exist to create color and joy.
