I'd have more sympathy for the "Big companies don't pay us when they use our free software, so we have to use a non-free license" arguments if there was any evidence that the people making this argument were funding all the free software they depend on

Amazon does not have a good reputation for giving software back. It takes, extends and retains where possible.

Amazon has made significant contributions to the kernel in a way many benefit from. They may well take more from open source than they give, but most companies are benefitting more from Amazon than Amazon is from them

In the last Linux Foundation report available (2017), Amazon do not feature in the list of top 30 contributors, many of whom are much smaller than them. No surprise. Amazon extract from societies still over the world and I don't expect them to behave differently to open source.
