I'm really proud of this episode, because we mostly talked to Howard about his craft and his creative process, not about E.T. and the market crash. In fact, it took about 45 minutes until E.T. even came up!https://twitter.com/gamehistoryhour/status/1369665849183723521 …

Atari may not have hired @HSWarshaw at first interview, but thankfully his chutzpah quickly changed their minds. Now, he joins us on this week's podcast to share stories from his time at Atari, all documented in his book, Once Upon Atari. I think Howard's a really interesting guy, and his output during his time at Atari demonstrates a really unique take on what game machines could be capable of at the time. He's a rebel and a pioneer, not just "the guy who made E.T."

Anyway, go buy his book! There are not nearly enough video game autobiographies out there, let's demonstrate to the publishing world that we want to see more of these! http://onceuponatari.com

The narrative in my head was always that Howard overscoped E.T. because of his creative ambition, but what I didn't know until reading his book is that the game design he pitched was the game design he knew he could get out in six weeks! https://twitter.com/akh13/status/1369736306461270016 …

ET was unquestionably a marvel given the time allotted - and it made complete sense to anyone who'd read the manual. Good on-use map abilities, persistent enemies (who could be switched off), easy to trip up but hard to "lose", and it worked around limitations of the console.
