We're trying to push video game preservation forward by proving that there's a niche market for older titles the way that there's a niche market for, I don't know, old horror movies. I get the need to tell people if the games are "good," but I wish that was scored separately.

It frustrates me in the same way that some Amazon user reviews frustrate me. If I'm reading reviews of a DVD set of an old TV show, it's because I already like the show. I just want to know if they messed up the video transfer, if they did any bonus features, etc.

Honestly, I don't care about the Metacritic score or whatever, I just want our work to be critiqued! I want to know where we might have messed up so we can do better next time, and it's really hard to get that feedback when reviews are centered around the original works.

This was my frustration as a critic too! Back in 2010 I gave the only negative review to Monkey Island 2: Special Edition. MI2 is one of my favorite games, ever, but this edition cut content, broke iMuse, and introduced bugs that made reading dialogue impossible.pic.twitter.com/DhJTvwvDwv

Just about every other review was glowing because they, as they should, love Monkey Island 2. But to me, as a fan, this was the equivalent of cutting out the "News on the March!" intro from Citizen Kane and replacing the musical score with a "remaster" that changes the original.

Anyway. Fully acknowledging that I might just be selfish here, maybe most readers/watchers just want to know if the games are good or not, and that the video game "cinephiles" among us are the niche audience that should stick to our weird internet caves to discuss fine details.

Oh also LucasArts called my boss the day that review came out to try to get me fired or something, that was pretty funny.

Hmm. That's an excellent point. It's a question of forum and format. The average review in a Consumer Reports-sense doesn't really favor archival language.

It's called being bad at their job. There's literally no reason to review the gameplay of old games except outside of a few contextual statements. Attributing the review "Score" to the games already made, reviewed, etc. 10-20 years ago presented in their original form is silly.

It's also often misleading and misguided, and it just a enables idiotic "reviewers" to perform stupid, fallacious "hot takes" on classic games just for petty laughs and viewers. Shenmue 1+2,
#StarFox2, and others I'm unable to recall off the top of my head were victims to this.
