Hi Frances, or Twitter generally..This is a totally honest request, can you please educate me on why this is specifically is anti-Semitic. I understand it's offensive to both trump and netanyahu.... But what specifically is anti-Semitic. Is it the lapdog depiction, star lead etc

-
or just read the comments?https://twitter.com/HeidiBachram/status/1122169210275287040 …
-
Yes - seconded; see above
-
Ok, thanks...this puppet master shite I get and think I understand....but does that anti-Semitic stereo type apply here, or is it that the interpretation is that the cartoonist is taking an anti-Semitic stereo type and turning it on its head, but using it nonetheless?
-
It's not on its head; Trump is blind and Netanyahu is leading him.
-
Ah right, and genuine thanks....it's amazing how you (well explicitly me in this case) can look at something and not see it. I did not pick up on the trump being blind/being lead... thought it was lapdog reference.... crazy that I missed it
-
It can take a lifetime education and the vigilance that only comes with being the target. That's why we listen to folks about their own oppression... thanks for doing that here. :)
-
this is such a genuine conversation we don’t see enough of

I know this is entirely beside the point but it’s riled me they’ve made Netanyahu into a dachshund. Why have they done that? Is it some kind of German reference?
-
This is their own special contribution to the imagery and I'm very bemused by this.
-
Dachshunds were used in lots of American anti German propaganda in WWI but god knows why they are using it in this instance.pic.twitter.com/16uQX0ritx
-
Possibly a nod to comparing Israel to Nazi Germany?
-
I can’t think of a reasonable alternative.

If anyone genuinely wants to know why this is antisemitic, the NY Times pulled it and explained why themselves. Depicting Jewish ppl as 'all powerful' has a long history. https://twitter.com/nytopinion/status/1122143162506596354?s=20 …pic.twitter.com/wLBEdqB55R
-
I’m genuinely confused. If this had been a poodle with Blair’s face, how would that have shown Blair in an ‘all powerful’ position, and not the complete opposite?
-
You didn't read the NY Times post about it. Its a guide dog leading Trump who is wearing a yamulke.
-
No, I read your ‘Puppetmaster’ link. Sorry, hadn’t noticed the blind Trump: maybe if they’d depocted a Labrador. But I see it now, thank you. (and no in intended)
-
Yes it's not totally obvious it's a guide dog. I got the clue from Trump's glasses and from knowing the history of these kinds of images of Jewish ppl. Good to get informed and educated so we know how to spot these tropes and reject them.

Why is this anti-semtitic? Surely it's anti-Netanyahu?
-
“Jews secretly control governments, and governments do their nefarious bidding” is an antisemitic trope that goes way, WAAAAAAAY back, long before the State of Israel. When someone has a pop, using the identical age-old trope as used to demonise jews, yeah it’s antisemitic.
-
So when an awful right wing Israeli leader is running rings around an idiotic awful right wing US president no-one can point this out, without being labelled as anti-semitic?! Give me a break!
-
I’ve no objection to people having a pop at Netanyahu. Hell, I’ve done it myself more than a few times. I’ve every objection to expressing that condemnation by using an age old antisemitic trope.
-
Even the NYT has acknowledged their error of judgment in publishing the cartoon *and specifically mentioned the antisemitic trope in their statement*.
