I doubt many in development studies departments (at least anymore) would frame what they do as just relating to the 'aid industry' (big D) - which is only a very small actor driving change in the world, relative to government, private sector and civil society actors (little d).

Agree in terms of what interests faculty, but not at all sure same goes for the students who pay our wages!

Interesting. This seems to focus on advocacy - challenging companies etc. But I think solid, careful, collaborative Government work is an important opportunity - even for European graduates. Not flashy or shouty. Just reducing emissions, tackling global public goods.

Likewise, graduates can support ongoing, collective efforts within companies to effectively strengthen responsible business practices. Neednt be 'mobilising' or 'advocating' While my own approach is often a trifle LOUD, there are many other (often more effective) pathways.

I’d argue that most DS programs still assume a continuation of the status quo and what is being taught tends to still be traditional approaches and tools.

This is a bit of a generalization of course but I’d like to see DS programs start to catch up with what is also being discussed in terms of development futures and innovation. Some are but it’s not consistent and the localization agenda is one solid example.

The young people have to be taught to be adaptable. Something about expecting lifetime employment in the development business is ...strange.

My advice is not to start in development. First choose the sector you're interested in: health, education, human rights, public finance... Whatever floats your boat. Then get some experience, skills and networks in that sector. Then move into development, if you still want to
-
And then maybe get out again.... I am really not convinced that it will be helpful or relevant to consider development as a sector: why not beba health specialist, economist or political scientist who specialises in different countries/contexts?
