been thinking about why i am so determined to perform the Kind of Bad Fandom that i do: the loud physical desire, the unashamed magical thinking, the telegraphed disinterest in the "real" metrics of the sport, DREAMBOAT DREAMBOAT DREAMBOAT, etc

and of course the main reason is the same reason i do anything: SPITE, spite towards the corny terrible "Rules of The World Cup for Women" dudes of the world, but also at the way the first retort to these dudes is always "not all woman fans care about these guys' looks!"

which like, SURE, but also, FUCK OFF! i feel like i spent much of my early twenties trying that tack. and it doesn't work! they find some other way to put u down & even if they dont, there is NO REWARD. the reward is: some shitdick telling you you're "not like other girls."

you will not be taken more seriously, you will not be permitted even to Watch the Fucking Game in Peace, and so at some point i discovered that the only way to Watch the Fucking Game in Peace is to lean right into it.

let me tell u: if a terrible man ever asks if u like something "just because [x athlete] is hot," nothing shuts him up faster than turning cold dead shark eyes upon him and saying softly, "there is no place on that guy's body i wouldn't pay to eat chocolate chips off or out of."

"yes. you're right. that's the only reason i'm here. i've spent the last three hours thinking about what if i am a sexy viking and he is a warrior monk and i've just crashed through the wooden door of his cell on Lindisfarne and we are dueling"

(and, by the way, i am aware that the very urge to catalogue or justify this behavior means these useless dudes have [as the Yinzers say] real estate in my head, which is very stupid! who cares WHY! it's fun and i love doing it!!!)

BUT, i think there is another reason which is a little bit more personal and which i'm interested in teasing out: i think to some extent I am trying to prove to myself that it is not inherently degrading to be an object of desire.

or maybe that's not quite it, maybe more that someone can be or not be a sexual being without losing other aspects of their personhood; that "desirability" isn't a characteristic that occludes all other characteristics.

and not just trying to prove that it's not degrading to be desired, but that women can HAVE and EXPRESS desire without ceasing to be intelligent or funny or interesting. to express desire isn't shameful. in fact it is super dope and hilarious and highly enjoyable
