A short, happy thread for a change: I don't often talk about parenting online, because I had a really hard time with it early on for a number of reasons, but now that my son is in school, picking him up in the afternoon has become the highlight of my day.

We walk home together, and we talk - often about what he did in school, but just as often about shows that he loves, or his toys, or games, or whatever questions he has on his mind. And I honestly, truly love it in a way I never expected.

Yesterday, his class learned about volcanoes, so we talked about them for a bit. Today, he wanted to talk about planets, so we went through the whole solar system together. He knows Pluto is a dwarf planet & that Jupiter is a gas giant, but he didn't know moon-aliens aren't real.

I'm continually fascinated by which things in stories he can immediately identify as being fiction, and which he isn't sure about, and which things he thinks are true but aren't. He knows talking robots aren't real, but I guess the moon is so far away he figured aliens could be?

My first went through a period of asking what is real & what isn't - "Are aliens really real?" "Are dragons really real?" "Are dinosaurs really real?" "Are pirates really real?" But my favourite: "Are scientists really real?"

The other week, I got, "Are bad guys real? Is prison real? Can kids go to prison?" in immediate succession. The same walk home, he also asked where babies come from and how can people get eaten by snakes.
