I think long-term the idea is that they wouldn't be actively bred anymore -- which of course resolves the issue over a longer period, because they don't live forever. If we abolished meat and dairy tomorrow though...no idea

Yeah, I get the no more breeding thing. But then... where do the cows actually GO? Are they going to let an entire species die out by seeing them all neutered, or are they going to try and have a domesticated species go wild again?

I don't doubt that a few people would keep them as pets, but otherwise yeah -- probably looking at mass extinction, because a lot of them just wouldn't survive in the wild. Seems pretty grim on the face of it

Because there’s no options other than factory farms or extinction?

How about sustainable, ethical farming outside of a factory model?

I mean, the rest of the world doesn't factory farm the way America does? Not saying there aren't abuses elsewhere, but don't conflate the American default for a global one. But either way, I fail to see how ending a species isn't itself animal cruelty.

Eating them serves a purpose. Killing them just to kill them, because we can't be bothered to think what else to do with them, is a waste.
