I know PETA basically plans to kill all domesticated animals since they consider them abominations.

PETA are trolls though, they’re just about making money off controversy.

I can't answer for all vegans. But the implication in your objection- that millions of dairy cows would be put down--is not as terrible when you consider actual living conditions. Plus it happens once, as opposed to generations of what for humans we'd call fate worse then death.
-
I wasn't implying they'd be put down; I specifically asked if they'd be returned to the wild. You're honestly arguing that eradicating an entire species of animal for the sake of human convenience is preferable to just treating them better?

I think long-term the idea is that they wouldn't be actively bred anymore -- which of course resolves the issue over a longer period, because they don't live forever. If we abolished meat and dairy tomorrow though...no idea
-
Yeah, I get the no more breeding thing. But then... where do the cows actually GO? Are they going to let an entire species die out by seeing them all neutered, or are they going to try and have a domesticated species go wild again?

I had one person argue that they didn't approve of the way domestic animals were treated, so they refused to participate. No particular endgame - just a Gandhi inspired peaceful protest. I felt they robbed themselves of their biggest weapon as discerning consumers.

I'm guessing wander the streets, like in India. That'll be fun.

Considering that there's a bunch of research on diet to reduce cattle methane... I mean. Irish dairy practices aren't that bad, so I don't really understand the vegan extreme.
-
I do sometimes wonder if they realise that the most likely result if everyone suddenly stopped consuming animal products is that those animals would be slaughtered. It's expensive to keep them with no return on the investment.
