The fact that this "award" is for something called the "New York Literary Magazine" is, of course, I'm sure, a mere coincidence, and NOT AT ALL a brazen ambush marketing tactic to make people think this site and the NY Times are related by including a 25-year-old quote.

There’s an entire industry of “book awards” that use this general format. I recently tried to discuss the taint this format brings to s.o. starting a new award & using this format. Either she honestly thinks this is standard practice or she’s ok with being a scammer.

and there are numerous sites that read and review, then award awards and don't charge a dime... I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, you pay to enter the Ritas, right? But telling me I'm nominated already...?!

I got suckered - sigh. But I paid through paypal. When I asked for my money back because it was a scam, I got this response, not even from someone with a name. I figure the money's gone, but now everyone knows them:pic.twitter.com/wDyddKqwYT

I'm so sorry!
@victoriastrauss and Author Beware should note this response, too. - Show replies
