Telling me "you need to decide" on a usage as though I haven't? Already done that? By making the choice I've already made??

Telling me "make sure it's really clear to readers," okay, but there is literally an explanation RIGHT THERE? Which you haven't flagged?

Like, if you think the *explanation* is bad, I can fix it! But past that point, it's pretty fucking self-explanatory what each usage means!

It did not help my mood that earlier in the same MS, this editor had queried another character's pronouns after they were revealed as trans.

Like I just. Only ONE PRONOUN is ever used for that trans character, but as soon as his binder's mentioned, there's a he/she in comments.

What is perhaps most frustrating is that this editor is clearly very well-meaning. They liked the book! But stuff like this was just... AUGH

To be clear: I do not for a minute believe that this editor was trying to be hurtful or insensitive. They wanted to do their job well.

But as @halleluyang said, it's genuinely demoralising for queer & genderqueer writers to receive these sorts of comments.

For me, it wasn't just personally upsetting; it made it actively difficult to trust the editor's judgement about certain parts of the book.

Without wanting to go into detail, there were other comments made about the portrayal of PTSD & neurodivesrsity in the story, which - well.

Put bluntly, the editor's comments suggested they did not understand these issues well enough to pass judgement on my execution of them.

And these were parts of the book where I *really fucking badly* wanted feedback! I was nervous about getting it right! And yet.

Okay, you know what? I'm actually still mad about this. I had a mental meltdown over these goddamn edits because of this stuff.
