Foz Meadows added,
1st: this wasn't issued by an employer, but by a recruitment agency, @TactiCallAU. However, I was there specifically for a government job.
2nd: at the end of the session, I had a one-on-one conversation with the guy supervising the exercise to explain my reaction to it.
He behaved really well, listened to my constructive feedback on how to make it not awful & what the issues were, and apologised to me.
I raised the stereotyping, the ableism & the eugenics of it, the implications of forced pregnancy, & the potential distress to interviewees.
As such, thanks to this specific employee, I left feeling somewhat reassured that the activity changed & the issues addressed. HOWEVER.
The thing that exacerbated by distress at the content was the hostility of the facilitator when I objected. She basically said "then go".
I pointed out that it was an exercise in eugenics, and that I was shocked we were doing it. Asking me to go became "I think you should go."
Now. I will freely that my initial reaction was not constructive. From memory, I said, "I'm sorry, this is disgusting." Because SHOCK.
I was honestly blindsided, especially as she'd introduced it as a "fun activity". My subsequent comments were still critical, but reasoned.
At this point, we'd already completed the actual testing portion of the interview: this part was meant (I assume) to test group socialising.
So being told "I think you should go" after 2 hours - as in, *no longer be considered a viable candidate for government work* - was WHOAH.
