In related news, the FBI is now being encouraged to round up every horror and murder mystery writer and reader for questioning, because honestly, who the fuck would write that stuff if they weren’t a little dangerous to real human people? I mean, EW!

I honestly don’t understand how so many creative people, who live by their imagination, in this one respect are so unimaginative that they cannot conceive of any dimension of fantasy as separate to reality.

I just really need it to be acknowledged how many of the adults deemed gross for their investment in teen characters by this Think Of The Children rhetoric are themselves parents, because this never gets discussed - and that elision is, I think, extremely revealing.

The image that gets conjures up by these arguments is of single, straight, childless adult women slavering over fake teenage boys as a predatory proxy for real ones, which - aside from conflating fiction for reality - ignores anyone who is happily partnered, queer and/or a parent

The idea that a non-zero number of the women investing in fictional teen boy romance in whatever format are lesbians? Oh, oh! Inconvenient for the pearl-clutching! Inconvenient for the pearl-clutching and thus disregarded!

Why does this demographic elision matter? Because the idea that fictional/fantasy preferences must necessarily align with IRL wants and actions is much easier to push when you’re placing it next to a convenient vacuum. Single adult women are just so much more SUSPICIOUS here -

- because, consciously or not, you’re using their singleness as a covert proof of deviance, and goddamn, is that an old, OLD form of Puritanism. “See the spinster eyeing up the young men? No wonder she has no husband and no respect for a woman’s duties!”

But if you have to acknowledge that the woman is married, or queer, or a parent… suddenly, there’s no handy domestic vacuum for your perception of their fantasies to fill. It’s like trying to argue that a married fan is committing adultery by reading or writing erotica: absurd.

Replying to @fozmeadows
Fun fact: saw a TERF fash today argue exactly this. That it is “unhealthy” to consume porn in a relationship
