A thing I wish more people knew: when you “train” yourself to get good at running in high heels or wearing them all day, what you’re actually doing is shortening your Achilles’ tendon, such that doing the same things in flats often end up painful. Higher heels = shorter AT.

Adults choosing to modify their bodies in whatever way is completely fine, but it’s very much less an informed choice when you don’t know that the acclimation you’re making to heels is physically altering your body in a way that can have repercussions.

Which is why I get absolutely FERAL about putting little girls in “trainer” heels from young ages. You are significantly altering their ability to be comfortable or to run in flats! And the long-term effects are worse, because you’re doing it to them from childhood!

In conclusion heels can look boss as hell and be very fun, but please take care of your Achilles’ tendons! I am reliably informed that tearing or snapping them is Extremely Unpleasant!

It's why it's so important to vary heel height with your shoes, and do all manner of stretches. I used to wear heels when I was a teacher, to get that extra bit of height.

All of figure skating relies on being able to have very comfortably flexed feet. Which is making it a nightmare sport for me to learn probably in part because of the years I spent only wearing heels. So much stretching.

YEP. For years, heels were more comfortable for me due to some naturally shorter tendons/ligaments (not just my feet) and high arches. Now I can't wear them anymore because the heel of my foot has degraded (from other health issues). It is... unpleasant.

My best friend’s mother couldn’t wear flats after a lifetime in heels!

“Flats.” The word is *shoes.* Only women have to specify that they are wearing the default footwear that doesn’t damage the musculoskeletal system. Once worked for a firm that *required* women to wear min. 1.5” heels, pumps only. How many blown knees, etc. for “dress code?”
