You could argue that it’s “consistent with the setting,” whatever that means, but the book canon is already being changed for the TV show: nothing is immutable. And it’s been a hot minute since I read the books, but I’m pretty sure this level of anti-Shu language wasn’t present.

All of which is a way of saying: this one aspect of Shadow and Bone sucks, it may very well be a dealbreaker for some & that’s fine, but the show is otherwise trying and doing a lot very well, and we can critique the one aspect while still supporting the other.

i'm at about the same point in the show as you are, and i haven't read the books so i was surprised to hear it was added-- i've felt that it gives depth to her feeling like an outsider even in communities of outsiders (the orphanage).
