You don’t question heroes, and if they ARE heroes, then why would you examine the systems that produce them, either? It’s just bizarre.

criticism of the millitary and government systems left civics education around the gulf war; it left all popular/mainstream american media at 9/11. most american's conception of dissenting/critical popular media is the fucking daily show.
The hero thing also really took off in 2001 after 9/11. It wasn't as prevalent in the weird twisted way it is now. I don't recall any of my schooling calling people heroes (and mind you, this may be due to where I lived at the time.)
And considering I lived in Napa for a time, I'm kinda shocked there *wasn't* more jingoism, but a lot of it was a) not talked about and b) possibly because the AP history teacher I had in high school was not willing to sugarcoat terrible things (he was also half Mexican, so...)
