Which means that, for all their strengths, western TV shows frequently suck at purposefully developing a romantic relationship from beginning to end. It's always about relationships, plural, sex and breakups and obstacles, b/c they're always trying to keep their options open.

In conclusion: I have fallen into the abyss of Guardian, The Untamed, Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty and Word of Honor. I can't get up but that's fine, I'm very happy in my new habitat. Please slip food under the door at appropriate intervals.

And even without being able to show the two leads kissing, these dramas do the romance bit so, so well. Add to that a breathtakingly beautiful aesthetic and a stunning fight choreography. How can we not like them?

They can take away the kissing but they can never take away the intense staring.pic.twitter.com/0gllrq1fKk

A big part of this is how the TV model works in the US, where you have a premise and an episode of the week, and the point is to draw this out as long as possible. The TV model in the UK has worked very differently, with short seasons and limited runs.

Chinese shows tend to air every night for 1-2 months instead of the model of running for years, weekly, and the Chinese are also used to adapting novels into TV series, whereas this is relatively new for English-speaking TV.

Hi! I came across your thread and 110 percent agree. If you would like to explore a nuanced Chinese political+wuxia drama with similar subtext, Nirvana in Fire 1 - is the best of its genre. It's more political bromance with strategy, but worth a watch for sure.

I've already watched and LOVED Nirvana in Fire, it was absolutely top tier!
