Good stuff. Why do you think people are resistant to doing the cultural research? When some of the British fandoms were first exploding, "Brit-pickers" were a major thing to ensure details were correct. Why the pushback now? (Besides the obvious white privilege, of course)

On one level, I suspect a lot of people don’t/didn’t realise how heavily xianxia settings are rooted in real Daoist ideas and Chinese history; they just saw “magic,” assumed “fantasy but Asian” and then got defensive when this was challenged bc it seemed fine to *them*.

On another level, I suspect some ppl (albeit subconsciously) assumed writing about a POC-centric fandom = free cookies. Like, there have been enough arguments about POC characters being neglected in fandom that probably some ppl went “aha, nobody can accuse us of that this time!”

But precisely because so many of those POC characters were done dirty by their canon, fanworks often constituted an improvement by default, even if they were still imperfect - but bc there were still white characters, when ppl did get called out for doing POC characters badly -

- they didn’t need to deal with that criticism to stay engaged in the fandom. They could just go “well fine then, it’s too hard, I’ll stick with the white boys” and leave in a huff. But they can’t do that in a fandom with *no* white characters, and it’s confronting.
