Guys. I’m so tired. The Florida Virtual Curriculum is always bad but today it is TESTING ME. A thread:

- once again, this paragraph is so goddamn anodyne that YOU CANNOT CLAIM THAT IT HAS A CENTRAL MESSAGE IN THE FIRST PLACE. THIS IS A FUCKING ANECDOTE, NOT A STORY!! It doesn’t have a “message” because it’s not trying to teach you anything!! I HATE IT HERE YOU GUYS IM

And THEN we get to THIS, where “been” apparently doesn’t have a long e sound?? BOTH THESE ANSWERS ARE CORRECT, WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL, WHO WROTE THISpic.twitter.com/W7xPLMEhJM

And after all this, the 8yo is expected to answer a suitably incoherent question: “what is your favorite subject are in school and why.” Lay me to rest. I am DONE.pic.twitter.com/2TggnQFCAh

Obviously the message is that this guy is bragging about his smart dog that can play sports. It does sound like the dog is an active player in the team, I assume this is the beginning of some Air Bud type movie.

I'm guessing the point of the question was to test if students know to look for the main idea in the first/topic sentence...? But it kind of defeats the purpose when most of the rest of the paragraph does nothing to support the idea in that first sentence.
-
The more I look at it, the more I suspect they made the bulk of the paragraph off topic on purpose so they could turn it into a trick question. That's...not a good way of teaching.....

The question is wrong. They want to know the main topic.
-
Yes - but arguably, all of those answers could qualify.

You're thinking like a writer; your kid is thinking like someone who has been trained by the educational system to recognize what they want the students to do and not question the banal and irrational nature of the material.
