The pure ideals of the Round Table and Arthur's Knights, the quest for the Grail, the idea of a Golden Age - you can only take it at face value if you accept that reductive, pat idea of women as being either evil temptresses or helpless maidens. Otherwise, the women belie it.

My absolute favorite version of the Arthurian mythos is Gerald Morris' Squire's Tales. Bc he takes on all of the myths from the perspective of the forgotten and invisible characters- squires, women, minor characters... plus they're SMART and funny and have so much heart.

(Foz, have you read American Queen by Sierra Simone? It's hugely based off of Camelot, is kinky, and so so gay.) (I still need your book, but you might enjoy the other ;))

It has its issues, but one of my favorite versions is The Mists of Avalon, by Marion Zimmer Bradley - the Arthurian story told through the eyes of the female characters.

Hollywood misunderstands the Arthurian tradition so much. It’s not because of the Guinevere/Lancelot/Arthur triangle (although give me a poly relationship) it’s not even so much because of rape & incest. It’s because the system of chivalry & patriarchy fail

My favorite retelling of the Arthur story is still 'Mists of Avalon' by Marion Zimmer Bradley (the book, not the miniseries)

The thing that absolutely slays me about how Hollywood continually messes this up is that giving the women agency and addressing how the knights are flawed and imperfect would in fact *automatically* make it the gritty reboot they always seem to love so much.

They wouldn't even have to try! It's RIGHT THERE. I can't wait to miss the Zack Snyder film.
