The book wasn't "about" how other races and cultures were ignorant or bad, and so I missed it completely, even though, as an adult, I can see now that it's a constant narrative undertone. But if the book had made similar declarative asides about Australians? I'd have seen it.

Another one which I loved as a teen but is Problematic on re-read - and not just because the author turned out to be an Awful Person - is David Eddings' The Belgariad.

maybe 20-30 minutes suggesting a HUGE variety of kidlit and ya, all of which were vetoed for a variety of reasons. one of these was the hunger games, which was “inappropriate”

I feel you. I argued with RAH over feminism and the war in 1970 and I was not accepted warmly by many fanfolk because I called out his perv bullshit etc. I don’t love a lot of foundational work and I’m so happy now we don’t have to keep pretending.
