The "actually Shakespeare write fanfic" take made me red-faced mad. I was stompin', hootin', AND hollerin'. Shot my six shooters into the ground until I floated in the air for a bit.

If everything is fanfic, then nothing is fanfic, and the term fanfic stops meaning anything.

If your objection to fanfic, as your thread argues, specifically because people aren't using their own characters but are "mashing action-figures together," then the same criticism logically applies to published works that borrow from other stories.

You can't say "fanfic is bad because people aren't being original" and then turn around and say "but it's ok if what they're referencing is out of copyright" because that... does not make any sense?

If your objection is that people are lauding corporate IP because capitalism - which, okay, depending on your definition of corporate IP, that's far from the only thing that gets fic written about it, but fine - why are you fine with the greater capitalism of publishing?

If your objection to fanfic is that it's "for children" - which, again, a weird claim to make given how much erotica exists in fanfic, but fine - are you likewise mad about adults who read published YA for fun? Or do you make exemptions for teenagers who enjoy fanfic?

You, personally, do not have to enjoy fanfic. But claiming that fanfic *in its entirety* is bad makes as much sense as literary snobs saying that all YA is trash, or that all SFF is trash. It's just a bad take, period.

The fact that you have a podcast dedicated to teaching people how to write and think you're giving good advice with this... whew.

The overlap between professional authors - and editors and reviewers, for that matter - and fanfic writers is much, MUCH larger than you seem to realise. If you're wondering why you're getting so much pushback, you just told half your field they don't know their own business.

If you want, I can take you through a list of recent Hugo winners and nominees in all categories who are public about reading and/or writing fanfic, myself included.
