Every time some poor parent mutters about the “new” ways of teaching math, I’m more convinced the schools don’t actually want kids to learn the subject. Basic math is NOT that difficult; the schools just twist it and turn it until it’s completely confusing.

I hate the number line with a passion. It’s such a worthless pedagogical tool.

so my viewpoint is likely skewed since all I see are your tweets about it, but it's starting to sound like homeschooling might actually be easier

Based on my recollection from a few years ago, the in-school curriculum would be taught that way too. It's how they teach math now - everything leading up to algebraic reasoning. For my kid, 2nd grade was much too early for that.

It's inefficient, but it is helpful to get kids to visualize the relationship between numbers. I'd say number lines are prb a good idea for a bit. I also use chips as my kid is learning division. Takes longer, inefficient, but I want him to have a solid number sense

He’s already got a number sense tho. He’s getting a better sense of addition by doing 62 + 20 as 6 + 2 = 8, so 60 + 20 = 80, so 62 + 20 = 82, and it’s helping him be fluent, which is one of their states goals.
