virtual school: okay, we’re going to teach your 7yo how to write! me, a writer: great! vs: we’ll do this by starting with structured informative paragraphs! me: what vs: the topic will be helping people in the community! me: but vs: and you can’t help them! me: [screeeeeeeam]

anyway I had him write a paragraph about fortnite instead of community helping because he actually knows what that is and can think of things to say about it, which made it easier for him to grasp, kind of, what the structure was meant to be doing.

I battled with the comp department over this while I was working on my (never actually used) teaching certificate, b/c I had the temerity to suggest that writing assignments should relate to the intended/declared major of the students.

OMG THIS! I'm separating knowledge growth and skill growth. So, for ex, he can just tell me longform answers and I'll write them down bc he really struggles with fine motor skills. And then, separately, we practice writing. Bc thinking while struggling with mechanics suuucks.
