here's what's getting to me: schools KNOW that young kids cannot do virtual school without parental assistance, but have done nothing to take this into account in a practical way. their starting principle has been "make it as close to Real School as possible" without considering-

Yep. Same here in the US. My school actually said our kids should have a “partner adult” attend zoom meetings w/kids and assist with work. So they at least set the expectation.

I'm in the US, too. *sigh*

We haven't started yet, but I have 3 kids and I am dreading it. Our ministry of ed says kids have to be online from 9 - 3:20, with only two short breaks. It's going to be brutal.

All of this!! I have 3 boys. Kinder, 3rd and 8th. We did two weeks of virtual school and it is unsustainable long term. I pulled them out and am homeschooling them. We can learn on our own time with our own schedule and the kids are so much happier

I am FEELING THIS today. There is a fucking classroom management piece to teaching that we have no idea how to handle at home (particularly with TWO KIDS with DIFFERENT TIMING). They are trained in this.
-
Acting like they don't have to adapt that particular part of teaching and can just hand it off to parents is not okay. I am happy to blame the administration for this rather than teachers, I GET that it's super hard, but we do not have the tools for this as parents.

I am more flexible with my college students this semester than this teacher with their 7yos. I will say that it is SO MUCH WORK putting everything you might possibly refer to, every instruction etc. on Canvas or in an email. But no way should we ask so much of elementary students

Not a parent or a teacher, but I feel like a way better system would include interactive games. If the teacher is using canvas, then there's games that can be done in the discussion section. Also teach the kid to take screenshots and have them play educational games!

Minimal printing out, due to the lack of printers in some families, and increased critical thinking. Also, much like online college classes, it would be structured to be done at any point of day.
