As a white person who goes by a non-conventional name that often provokes inquiry (Foz), it's very apparent to me that the flavour of inquiry I encounter is much, MUCH kinder than that experienced by POC with "ethnic" names.https://twitter.com/ShvetaThakrar/status/1289401000911163394 …

If I tell white people my on-paper, actual legal name that almost nobody uses, they don't ask to start using it because it's "more familiar," nor do they try to construct a version of my name that's "easier" to pronounce. I don't get asked where I'm from because of it, either.

I get to tell a cute story about how a childhood nickname became my functional name, and everybody rolls with it. They apologise, even, if they pronounce it wrong because of their accent! They make an effort to get it right! And that should be a basic, universal courtesy!
