As a white person who goes by a non-conventional name that often provokes inquiry (Foz), it's very apparent to me that the flavour of inquiry I encounter is much, MUCH kinder than that experienced by POC with "ethnic" names.https://twitter.com/ShvetaThakrar/status/1289401000911163394 …

Also, as I've said before, there's no such thing as "unpronounceable" or "hard" names. There's only what you happen to be used to from the language you grew up with. #decolonize https://twitter.com/enoughsnark/status/1289396535487209476 …

If I tell white people my on-paper, actual legal name that almost nobody uses, they don't ask to start using it because it's "more familiar," nor do they try to construct a version of my name that's "easier" to pronounce. I don't get asked where I'm from because of it, either.

I get to tell a cute story about how a childhood nickname became my functional name, and everybody rolls with it. They apologise, even, if they pronounce it wrong because of their accent! They make an effort to get it right! And that should be a basic, universal courtesy!

Yeah. I get the kinder inquiries with last name. It's the difference between "Oh did I say that right? What an interesting name, where is it from?" and "I dunno how to pronounce that, and there's no point even trying to get it right."

Also a white person with a "difficult" name, and the thing that disturbs me the most is the visible relief when someone calls my name (e.g. at an job interview) and sees that I'm white

Even with a simple name like mine people still get it wrong regularly. Like people honestly add and remove letters? I've been called Tibia and Tifa... 😂 And oh NO if I try to correct them people get defensive about it too.

First or last? My last name intimidates people trying to pronounce it. OTOH, far more get it right now than when I was a kid. I credit #anime 😁pic.twitter.com/rhaeCZsdKo

I was once talking to an international medical fellow about this and he said (with a staggering amount of bitter sarcasm) that if people could pronounce (famous local basketball player)’s name they could pronounce his.
