I'm getting a lot of DMs tonight from people who had previously formed an opinion of me based on the testimony of a person who has been revealed as an unreliable source of information. This is a person with whom I haven't had contact in a couple of years. We parted on bad terms.

My understanding, as of tonight, is that this person said things about me that run directly contrary to the way I try to live my life, in order to preemptively discredit and isolate me within the publishing community. Finding out about these efforts is a fucking bummer.

I am a far from perfect person, and I've fucked up plenty in my life and in this community. Nobody is obligated to interact with me. Nobody is obligated to believe that I am Good. More important than that: if you believed what he had to say about me, I don't blame you.

We trust the people who we are closest to. We trust the people who we think are Good. That's how the world works! And if someone you think is Good tells you that I am a villain, it's not wrong of you to believe them.

The things that I'm finding out this person said about me have left me incandescent with rage. They're beyond the scope of what I thought he was capable of. But I don't blame anyone for believing him, because that's how communities work. We listen to the people we trust.
