So I was deep enough in the fandom at one point that I kinda have an explanation here? Like, there were specifically three people who were responsible for the vast majority of the most gross/racist/skeevy/sexist stuff in the show, b/c the writers' room ended up a broken base -

BUT THEN in s10, there is a Thing That Happens that literally *EVERY MAJOR CAST MEMBER AND ALL THE WRITERS BAR THE EP'S FAVE 2* argued against, vehemently, but the EP put his foot down and insisted it would be good for the show. he banked all his clout on it -

- called Wayward Daughters, which literally began as a fandom campaign (started by people I know!) and gained enough fandom traction for the writers/producers to consider it. It didn't get greenlit as a spinoff in the end, but it helped boost a LOT of recurring diverse characters
