after a bit of research, i realized i could also file in civil court for damages and reimbursement for the money spent. @VenmoSupport refused to reimburse me for the transaction, which is good future knowledge for anyone who might use the service.

i spoke to a couple of friends (many thanks to
@dislaw for his help!!) and filed an official complaint. we were given a court date at the end of may. then i hired a process server to have the summons served to the puppy seller... but COVID-19 happened and life went on pause1 reply 0 retweets 90 likesShow this thread -
...so i had no idea where everything stood until this week. did i actually get the right guy? did my detective work pan out properly? would i get my revenge on behalf of this tiny beast who’d died so terribly?

turns out: yes!! the animal control officer reached out at the beginning of the week to tell me he’d officially cited the seller for 3 civil violations totaling $1,250. he was hit with selling a puppy without a permit, having no official certificate of veterinary inspection...

it was VERY satisfying. it also meant that i had the right info. they lifted restrictions so the process server could hit him with the court summons. i got an email of confirmation at 1 PM and my phone started ringing 46 minutes later...

his mom, a paralegal, was actually the one who contacted me. she said they would settle for the full amount if i would withdraw the civil case. after some discussion with my legal friends, i decided to do that. in civil court, a judge decides the damages awarded..

..so there was a possibility i wouldn’t actually get the total i’d asked for. additionally, the case had been pushed to july due to COVID-19 and there was a strong likelihood that it would be pushed even further given the uncertainty of everything right now

so i was fully reimbursed for requested damages earlier today after withdrawing the civil suit. between that, the essential shutdown of his social media, and the citations and fines, i feel like i’ve done everything i could to ensure he was limited in further illegal behavior
