Folks, it must be said. If you decide to read a book that is, say, 55 years old, and act SHOCKED! SHOCKED! that its themes and characterizations don't conform to today's accepted social mores... welp, I don't know what to tell you. I mean... /1

I’m assuming this is directed at me reading Dune, and I’m aware of when it was written. Am I expecting it to conform perfectly to 2020 morals? No! Am I still allowed to laugh about it, and also feel a bit salty about how certain of its flaws are still lauded as great? Yup!

This was not directed specifically at you, I promise, but at people in general (I see it in booktube especially) making blanket dismissals of "classic" novels. Naturally, MOST older work doesn't hold up in the details, and easy to roll your eyes at. But... /1

...I simply meant to point out, EXPECT problematic content. I think a lot of readers without much exposure to older work don't know yet just HOW different people thought, and wrote about the world, 40-50-60 years ago. That's all. /2

Also, there’s a general frustration in seeing what some people want the genre to *still be,* because the bugs to them are features. That there’s people still lauding Dune and other such books, not despite their flaws, but because of them.
