My mother was born in 1950. Had a savings account with the same bank thru childhood. When she went to get a loan in her twenties the bank laughed & refused to give her one until she came back with a husband.

On both sides of my family, there’s tragedy from my grandparents’ generation and earlier bc women had no freedom. My g’ma & sister ended up orphaned young bc their dad ran off when they were kids and then their mother died, shamed by her Catholic family for her “failed” marriage.

On my dad’s side, the birth of a child out of wedlock was covered up so well that my dad & his sibs never knew the woman they grew up calling Aunt Nell was actually their grandmother until any adult who could’ve told them the whole truth was dead.

A very small part is that ppl dont have get to married anymore, so some ppl get married when their long term relationship isnt working right because they think thats what is missing
