You dont cut her any slack for being young? She feels like so many young, white, upper middle class, seemingly progressive women I have met in my life. Trying but untrustworthy. But that whole family is terrible.

My one piece of sympathy for Meg is that, when she makes the decision to side with her family, she doesn't know her mother is lying to her. She's got no idea that the reason they were specifically written out of the will is because her mother was stealing from Harlan -

- so when her mother says that there's no other way for her degree to be paid for, she's omitting the fact that she's been stealing, and still has access to, a large amount of Harlan's money. Meg still makes a shitty, selfish choice, but she's also being manipulated.

She's also the only person who apologises for her actions on screen, which. An extremely low bar to clear, and it doesn't change the fact that what she did was fucked up, but I do think it makes her better than her mother, at least.

I mean, I remember her apology involving her getting teary and making Marta soothe her and tell her it's fine. She demands emotional energy from Marta every time they talk. For me her apology cemented Meg's failure to grow.

That's fair; it's a different kind of shitty to what the rest of her family do.
