one of the many, many things I find bizarre about US politics now that I live here is the extent to which voters talk about being a [candidate] person, as though said politician is now Part Of Their Identity and not a pragmatic choice between varying types of bastard

I'm not saying there's no salient distinction to be made between greater, middling and lesser forms of political bastardry. but the idea that a candidate has to be perfect before you vote for them, as though the system stops existing if you stay home, is mind-boggling.

granted, large parts of the oligarichal american system are entrenched in gerrymandering, voter suppression and strategically encouraging political apathy, but adding even *more* futility to that system when you can do otherwise does not actually help to change or undo it.

As far as I can tell as someone who grew up here the core belief is something like “All politicians are bastardous fuckeringtons except for mine”. See also: people in favor of term limits in the abstract nonetheless want to be able to reelect their faves.
