one of the many, many things I find bizarre about US politics now that I live here is the extent to which voters talk about being a [candidate] person, as though said politician is now Part Of Their Identity and not a pragmatic choice between varying types of bastard

like. possibly I'm just being Very Australian about this, but is it not understood that by definition any good politician must be at least a little bit bastardous in order to do their job? that the whole point of a politician is to make hard choices that cannot always be perfect?

I'm not saying there's no salient distinction to be made between greater, middling and lesser forms of political bastardry. but the idea that a candidate has to be perfect before you vote for them, as though the system stops existing if you stay home, is mind-boggling.

granted, large parts of the oligarichal american system are entrenched in gerrymandering, voter suppression and strategically encouraging political apathy, but adding even *more* futility to that system when you can do otherwise does not actually help to change or undo it.

Their electoral system (first past the post) is based on asking "who do you like best", whereas preferential voting (like in Australia) allows for the slightly more nuanced approach of "who do I hate the least?"

Americans are encouraged to “like” everyone yet also form loyalties to various “teams” and this bollixes up our psyche in various ways.

Also since this is The Best Country In The World none of our candidates can be at all bad, except the ones we aren’t for, who are un-American monsters.

Yeah, a lot of American politics is like rooting for your fave sports team, which is something I never understood, but also, I really never had the option to be anything but a pragmatic voter. *shrugs* And honestly, I wonder if this isn't just another sign of who is privileged.
