On a related note, while no one is responsible for what their followers do (unless they’re actively encouraging dogpiling/abuse), any group of 1.1m people inevitably contains a LOT of assholes, and quote-tweets point those assholes squarely at a chosen target. Aim judiciously.

Thinking more about this whole situation... the stuff in Carcillo's past is fucked up. Truly reprehensible. Whether they believe in his redemption arc or not, nobody, especially not someone affected by him back then, including Biz, is obliged to forgive him for any of that.

By the same token, I understand why Carcillo is angry about hockey culture, both past and present. He fully embodied the worst of it, he admits that, and even if you don't want to like or forgive him, that admission is more meaningful than the alternative.

What's bugging me, though, is this habit both Biz and Dan have of popping off about anything that upsets them. I'm not asking for emotional distance from the material, but there's a belligerent pride to it that speaks to the worst of the hockey culture they both claim to oppose.

Barstool aside, the reason people are roping Biz in with Roenick's skeevy comments is that there's a *reason* he felt comfortable saying that stuff about Tappen and Sharp on Chicklets. It's locker-room talk: less vitriolic than Carcillo's past racism, but still related.

The whole macho-bro throwdown culture, where Biz can't let criticism about him exist in view of his fans without responding to it, or where Dan has to go full throttle on minor issues... it often feels less about any causes they have than about dumb male pride. Same as a tilt.

That's not a helpful approach on social media, which is so profoundly lacking in nuance anyway, and it's massively counter-intuitive if you are, for instance, trying to support women's hockey, mental health, better health protections for athletes or anything else -

- because you're still using the same bullheaded, drop-the-gloves-and-do-it-for-the-boys mentality that is *the actual goddamn problem underlying all these issues in the first place*.

Just. It's so fucking frustrating to watch these shitstorms in teacups happen, and think about how if Tappen had been anything other than scrupulously polite in public about Roenick saying he wanted to bang her, every douchebro cheering Biz or Dan would've called her a cunt.

It's maddening to think back on the Akim Aliu stuff, and see how basically his entire fucking career was derailed because he stood up for himself against racism - how he's still getting shit on online - when Biz or Dan can have a tantrum about whatever and nothing happens.

What's maddening is the double standard that manifestly exists in these cases, and which dudes like Biz and Dan still both rely on, whether consciously unconsciously, to brawl with people online, when the fact that *they* can do this is part of the goddamn problem.
