The thing that’s missing for me in this reclined seat/seat punching incident is whether there was any communication between the parties before the punching started. I still think the punching is overkill and the ultimate fault with poor plane design, but.

A couple of years ago I was on a long trainride when someone got into the (pre-booked) seat in front of me and reclined it the whole way, so it was almost flat. I had almost no room and couldn’t sleep anymore (I was exhausted), as I’d been pillowing my head on the folddown tray.

After a while I politely asked the person in front if she could maybe put her chair up a bit. She apologised profusely but couldn’t for medical reasons: she’d just had intensive eye surgery, was in much pain & was under doctor’s orders to lie down. She couldn’t fly, hence train.

However, both she and the friend looking after her were extremely kind and offered to let the friend swap seats with me, so I could sleep and have more space. They were both lovely people and had to repeatedly explain the seat down to stewards who pointed out the room it took up.

Point being, if the punching dude asked the lady if she could give him room and she had a reason for needing it back, he’s 1000% a douche. If she was rude and brushed off his discomfort for no reason, he’s still a douche but so is she. But antisocial design is still the real evil

Replying to @fozmeadows
From what I’ve read she’s had back surgery so needed to recline, put seat up during the meal, then reclined it again.
