Thank you! And you know what kills me about it? Steinbeck has the guy running off as a loner, probably to nobly accomplish nothing, and Babb has people uniting and working together, and the women count. And that's not the one that we study! (Sorry. I have some feelings.)

He did? I hadn't heard of this until just now. That's one of my all-time favourite books, so I want to know more about what you say here. I'll be doing some Googling.

There’s a whole section on it in the Wikipedia article for Grapes of Wrath; I read about it elsewhere, but the footnotes/links from that page are probably a good starting point

<later> Have just Wikipedia'd. Damn! Damn and double-damn! :/ Thank you for your tweet,
@fozmeadows. I didn't know about this business, but I do now. This feels like when I found out David Foster Wallace was a stalker/abuser. :/ Bugger! -
I didn’t know until pretty recently either; but then, I‘ve not read any Steinbeck, so it wasn’t a personal blow. I know that feel, though.

Somehow I feel justified knowing this since I intensely disliked Grapes of Wrath because of the writing style and how disconnected it felt as I read it.
