The game on Saturday was our annual Brotherhood Night which honors police officers who have passed away on the job. That night we honored Kendrick who died in a tragic school shooting with his parents dropping the puck. Incredible moment it and it was amazing to be a part of.https://twitter.com/fozmeadows/status/1218627416026841088 …

there's a fucking blue lives matter flag on the ice at pepsi center after the avs announcer just got through sounding like the voiceover for a B-grade action movie while describing the tragic death of kendrick castillo in "good and evil" terms. why the fuck do I watch hockey. pic.twitter.com/a1ZbVzNEYF

It’s not my place, (here I am tweeting about it) but I’d be shocked if the person who tweeted this felt the same afterwards.

I have no objection to honouring Kendrick. I truly feel for his parents. I object to using a flag that's become a dogwhistle for white supremacy in policing at an event meant to honour the death of a young, brown civilian.

It’s important to realize the original intent, not what Twitter will pick up on. It was an incredibly moving moment.

I watched the moment myself, and I was moved for the sake of the tragedy, but not by what I saw. The bombastic, good-and-evil speech given by the announcer, in gung-ho tones, left me shocked; the sight of that flag made me physically sick.

As for the original intent... look. Do you have events to honour those unjustly killed by police? No. Do you honour teachers, artists, those who create? No. You honour the cops and the army. I like the Avs, but the idea that these choices of events are political-neutral is false.

I'm glad to hear it, but from my perspective, hockey honours cops and the army *constantly*. Every game I've been to, some random soldier is honoured in the stands and we're meant to cheer. There's almost always some cop or another on the ice for the anthem. It's jingoism.
