so many people are mad about the various retcons and worldbuilding flubs in TROS and like. I get that, but at the same time, I was never, ever watching Star Wars for crisp details and continuity. I am here for the characters, the drama and the space magic visuals.

Characters are also way more important to me than plot mechanics but I think they all get more interesting stories in tlj. Poe especially. To me the exploration of actual flaws adds more character depth than a perfunctory tacked on romantic subplot with a last minute addition.

I don’t mind the idea of him being a flawed character; I do dislike that flaw being sexist arrogance and showing no regret for causing deaths, and I dislike the idiot plot of Holdo not telling anyone her plan Because Reasons.

Yeah he's problematic in that one (although, I think holdo's reasons are fine) but in the next one he's just dull.

I mean he has just nothing to do. He isn't even the one to convince his ex to help them.

Honestly, I take the point but I didn’t bug me. What I wanted was for the trio to be together and actually get o interact like friends, and I got that, which I didn’t in TLJ.

Maybe I am feeling overly generous towards tlj because I just really didn't like tros. But I think that effect is also possible the other way round.

it's not an effect. I disliked a lot of it after I first saw it, before I had TROS to compare it to, and every time I've tried to rewatch it since I've been too pissed off to finish.

Yes and the effect would be that this dislike for tlj would make you predisposed to forgive flaws in tros. Maybe you are not overly harsh about tlj, maybe you're overly generous about tros.

I understand your point, but I dislike that - from my perspective - you’re trying to explain my own feelings about a film to me, to make it so that “I disliked one film and liked the other” is somehow about subconscious bias rather than my actual preferences.

It’s like you’re saying, “you can’t REALLY have liked TROS this much, your judgement must be impaired somehow by your dislike of TLJ.”
