this is, I suspect, a large part of why I dislike TLJ. in a difference franchise I might care about Rian Johnson trying to reinvent the Force and comment on morality and whatever, but I couldn't get past what he did to Poe Dameron, who mattered more to me than the details.

by the same token, I just Do Not have the energy to hold TROS up to a critical microscope on plot grounds because It Is Star Wars! and the characters are doing things I like, or which at the least make sense to me, and also there are pretty visuals! The End.

"but WHY is palpatine back??" listen. LISTEN. I did not live through the Jar Jar Binks Era and Obi-Wan uncritically accepting his mystery army of identical men to start caring about whether the SW universe makes baseline sense at this late date.

"but in the supplemental stories, it CLEARLY states that-" sir I admire u for caring but I literally Do Not. there are supplemental materials where luke "extremely gay in armani" skywalker had a hot female wife. there was a christmas special where chewy had a son called lumpy.

do not come to me complaining about a sky full of force lightning. it is STAR WARS. did we ever care that darth maul was meant to show that the sith were a species, except for how they weren't? do I require a naturalist treatise stating the exact diameter of a wamprat? NO.

I understand that the geeksphere feels very kindly towards rian johnson at present as he has made a cool new original movie (which I am sadly yet to see, because Life, but which I badly want to) but knives out being good shouldn't retroactively redeem the last jedi.

the point being, while I respect the right of people to be as critical as they like about any film whenever, I have been... baffled, shall we say, by the sudden collective decision to treat star wars worldbuilding and continuity Extremely Seriously, when it has never mattered b4

Characters are also way more important to me than plot mechanics but I think they all get more interesting stories in tlj. Poe especially. To me the exploration of actual flaws adds more character depth than a perfunctory tacked on romantic subplot with a last minute addition.

I don’t mind the idea of him being a flawed character; I do dislike that flaw being sexist arrogance and showing no regret for causing deaths, and I dislike the idiot plot of Holdo not telling anyone her plan Because Reasons.

I also didn't like retconning poes military career for the somewhat clichéd smuggler backstory just to make him more like Han.

My beef with tros was that the emotional beats didn't land. Pay off needs build-up, but tros didn't use anything from tlj and was too overstuffed with random fanservice to build up anything itself.
