Where can one read more about this topic, specifically how this topic has been weaponized against Jewish people. I’d love to be educated around this ...pic.twitter.com/TDRAgb19Vq

I'll just put this fabulous tweet from @fozmeadows here, then you folks can Google more info on the subject of "model minority".https://twitter.com/fozmeadows/status/1210477283661627392?s=19 …

For example: "But why is it racist to tell a Chinese person she must be good at maths? That's a compliment!" It's racist because you're making assumptions based entirely race, which is exactly as offensive as if a random man assumed you loved shoe shopping because you're female.

Great tweet and thank you, never thought of the model minority as it applies to the Jewish community before now

One harmful stereotypes of Jews is that they have "too much" power. Say in banking or media, for instance. I saw a Nazi on Twitter today equating Jewish intelligence with being sneaky, conniving, calculating -- that kind of thing.

Well, first off IQ is a nonsense measurement. It predicts how well certain folks from certain backgrounds will do on certain kinds of standardized tests. Louis Armstrong was a massive genius and would likely have done poorly on an IQ test.

Secondly, a "positive" stereotype is still a form of prejudice -- literally prejudging people. Imagine someone who said all African-Americans are good at basketball.

Great way to frame. I’ve seen firsthand how the “good basketball player” stereotype has negatively impacted, stigmatized and in many ways pigeonholed young black men

It also argued against individual merit and effort, which is where the “positive” aspect becomes more pernicious. If you think a marginalised person didn’t have to work to get what they have because race made them born to it, it’s an easy step to resentment and dismissal.

And from there, it’s even easier to argue, wrongly, that more privileged but less successful people are being discriminated against, because a talented POC is there simply because of race and therefore doesn’t deserve whatever they have.

Foz! Thank you for popping into this thread. I saw what you posted recently and it was ~such a clearly stated explanation~ that I put it here. So glad you're willing and able to be a teacher in the public square, as it were. I appreciate Tweeple like you for what y'all do.
