Tentatively: I think as a culture we tend to write angry, troubled men as characters to be empathised with, but angry troubled women are written to be pitied, a character to feel bad for but isn’t meant to be YOU.

Yes, a lot of this, but think I‘m trying to stumble towards less the idea that it is the fault of the audience for failing to appreciate and more that we as writers are failing them in our narrative modes and framing?
