American bread options, as I currently understand them: 1 - bagels 2 - dry cakey slices 3 - soft tortillas 4 - artisanal "health" loaves 5 - garlic bread

I'm strongly tempted to learn how to make my own bread just because the quality of store bought bread grows worse by the month.
-
The process itself is easy, it's the hard work of kneading and all the waiting for it to rise that gets me. I have to remember to bake on the weekend or I have no time and we have no bread.

It so depends on where you are in the US. Farmers' markets sometimes have bread that is not artisanal bread.

You are completely right, except about *some* sourdough. We need Germany’s bread

So, so, so, so, so, sooooo with you on this. Bread. How hard can it be? I just want a decent slice of a nice malty brown bread that doesn’t break a tooth and isn’t sweet? It can’t be this hard.
-
Right?? All I want is a plain white sandwich loaf that isn't dry as hell or like a weird, dense cake.
