A way of dismantling whiteness is for white people to start naming their individual ancestries instead. (You know, the way a fifth-gen Chinese American is called Chinese, but a fifth-gen Dutch American is called white.) So if you didn’t call yourself white, what are you?

Lol, it’s a slightly recursive question in a way, as I’m Australian but now living in the US. So I do get asked where I’m from a lot, but it’s another colonised nation, so you have to track back another level for descent rather than personal origin.

I think a lot of white British people's families genuinely have been here so long that we literally have no idea, so white British is the only option. 'Anglo Saxon' is being appropriated by racists as a euphemism for white precisely as a consequence of this.

See also 'Viking'. I'm very likely to have Viking ancestry because of where my family records are from (the north of England) but again 'Viking' is being appropriated as a euphemistic and racially loaded term so referring to myself that way would do much more harm than good.
