Y'know. I liked what J. Michael Straczynski did back when he did Babylon 5. He said the story was going to be told over 5 years and then it was going to end. And he did it. I think telling a story over a determinate amount of time can be a real smart thing.

More and more I'm appreciating shows that do good work in one season and then end.

I have a 3/6 rule of thumb - a good show can run up to 3 seasons w/o faltering, and a great one can go up to 6 (but few do). Going longer means changing up cast/formula/story arc to a significant degree. Very few are willing/able to do that.

I started watching SPN b/c it was supposed to definitively end at season 5. Joke's on me and I never do that anymore - closed canon only.
