You know, it’s interesting, because I’ve seen a few readers say they are bothered by having pregnancy or transmission possibilities of sex to be things they never want in a romance. I think I can see why, although I also could see why it’d be frustrating not to have it

see, I can understand it in a context of 'this is explicitly about a romantic/sexual fantasy,' because the sex being a certain way, however unrealistic, is a key part of the escapism. but just as an element in a different type of story? nah

100% agree!! Almost nothing throws me out of contemporary romance faster.

I think it's unrealistic to have anyone not give a thought to pregnancy, STIs, condoms, etc. especially in contemporary narratives.

The worst thing is that this trope is so easy to get around? One sentence mentioning an IUD or the pill? Bam, problem avoided and sexy times can resume.

Or some sort of magical equivalent if you’re doing fantasy. And honestly, if wizards can shoot fireballs, they can prevent fucking babies with a cantrip.

I have gotten flack for having characters think/worry about this, or get pregnant BECAUSE they were having unprotected sex
